Restore your smile

Implant Dentistry

The closest thing to a natural tooth, with a stable root that also helps preserve your jawbone.

An implant is a small post, usually titanium, placed in the jawbone where a tooth root used to be. As the bone bonds to it, the implant becomes a stable foundation for a replacement tooth that looks, feels and works much like your own.

What implants can support

  • A single crown to replace one tooth.
  • A bridge to replace several teeth in a row.
  • A denture that clips firmly in place instead of resting on the gums.
  • A full arch of fixed teeth with All-on-4™.

Why choose an implant

  • No need to reshape the healthy teeth next to the gap, as a bridge requires.
  • Helps preserve the jawbone, which shrinks when a tooth is missing.
  • Stable when you eat, speak and laugh.
  • Can last for decades with good care.

How treatment works

  1. Consultation and planning with Dr. Winter, including an exam and digital X-rays.
  2. Placement of the implant by a specialist, usually under local anesthesia.
  3. Healing for a few months while the bone bonds to the implant.
  4. Your new tooth, a custom crown, bridge or denture made by Dr. Winter to match your smile.

Common questions

Who places the implant?

The implant itself is placed by a specialist, such as an oral surgeon or periodontist. Dr. Winter plans your treatment with you, coordinates with the specialist, and creates your final crown, bridge or denture.

How long does implant treatment take?

The bone usually takes a few months to bond with the implant. You can often wear a temporary tooth in the meantime, and the final tooth is attached once healing is complete.

Am I a candidate for implants?

Most adults in good general health who have lost a tooth can be considered. Healthy gums and enough jawbone matter, and smoking or poorly controlled diabetes can affect healing. We’ll review your situation with you.
