A fixed bridge replaces missing teeth with a false tooth, or teeth, held in place by crowns on the healthy teeth on either side of the gap. Because it is cemented in place, it stays put and feels secure.
Why replace a missing tooth
When a tooth is lost, the neighboring teeth can drift into the gap and the opposing tooth can move toward it, changing your bite and making the area harder to clean. A bridge fills the space and restores your smile and chewing.
What to expect
- Preparing the supporting teeth. The teeth on either side are numbed and reshaped to hold crowns, and impressions are taken.
- A temporary bridge protects the teeth while yours is made.
- Fitting. We check the fit, bite and color, then cement the bridge in place.
Treatment usually takes two visits over a few weeks, without surgery.
Other options
If the neighboring teeth are healthy and you’d rather not reshape them, a dental implant may be a better choice. When several teeth are missing, dentures are another option.
