A crown covers the whole visible part of a tooth, holding it together and protecting it from further damage. All-porcelain crowns contain no metal, so they look natural even on front teeth.
When a crown is recommended
- A tooth that is broken, cracked or badly worn.
- A tooth with a large filling and little natural structure left.
- A tooth that has had a root canal, which can become brittle.
- To improve the shape or color of a tooth.
- To top a dental implant or anchor a bridge.
What to expect
- Preparing the tooth. The tooth is numbed and gently reshaped to make room for the crown, and impressions or scans are taken.
- A temporary crown protects the tooth while your crown is made.
- Fitting. We check the fit, bite and color of your new crown, then bond it permanently.
Caring for your crown
Brush twice a day, clean between your teeth daily, and avoid chewing ice or other very hard objects. If you grind your teeth, a night guard helps protect your crowns.
