Laser dentistry: gentler treatment for your gums

How dental lasers are used to treat gum disease, mouth ulcers, gum pigmentation and more, and what the benefits mean for your comfort and healing.

Lasers have become a valuable tool in modern dentistry. For many procedures on the gums and other soft tissues of the mouth, a dental laser can take the place of a scalpel, making treatment more precise and recovery more comfortable. Here is how lasers are used and what they can mean for you.

How a dental laser works

A dental laser delivers a highly focused beam of light energy. Depending on the settings, it can gently remove or reshape soft tissue, seal small blood vessels as it works, and reduce bacteria in the treated area. Because the beam is so precise, it affects only the tissue being treated and leaves the surrounding healthy tissue largely undisturbed.

What lasers are used for

At SmileNY Dental, we use laser dentistry for treatments including:

  • Gum disease. The laser helps remove infected tissue and reduce bacteria in the pockets around the teeth, as part of Periodontal Treatment.
  • Mouth ulcers. Laser treatment can relieve the pain of recurring ulcers and help them heal.
  • Gum pigmentation. Dark patches on the gums can be lightened for a more even appearance.
  • Pericoronitis. When a tooth, often a wisdom tooth, has only partly come through, the gum flap over it can trap food and become inflamed. The laser can remove the flap.
  • Implant exposure. When a healed dental implant needs to be uncovered before its crown is attached.

The benefits

  • Less bleeding, because the laser seals small blood vessels as it works.
  • Often no stitches.
  • Faster healing and less swelling for many procedures.
  • Less scarring and a better cosmetic result.
  • Shorter procedures in many cases.
  • More comfort. Many soft-tissue laser procedures need less anesthesia, and patients who are anxious about scalpels often find laser treatment easier. If you feel nervous about dental visits, read how we help you feel at ease.

Is laser dentistry safe?

Yes. Dental lasers have been used for decades and are safe in trained hands. You’ll wear protective glasses during treatment, and we choose the laser settings carefully for each procedure.

Lasers aren’t the best tool for every job, and many treatments are still best done with conventional instruments. We’ll recommend laser treatment when it offers a real benefit for your situation.
