Nervous about the dentist? How we help you feel at ease
Dental anxiety is common. Practical ways to make visits easier, what to tell us, and how we help anxious patients get the care they need.
If the thought of a dental appointment makes you tense, you’re far from alone. Dental anxiety is very common. For some people it is mild unease. For others it is strong enough to put off care for years. The trouble is that avoiding the dentist often leads to bigger problems, and bigger treatments, later on. The good news is that there is a lot we can do together to make visits easier.
Tell us how you feel
The most helpful thing you can do is let us know you’re nervous, ideally when you book. There is nothing to be embarrassed about. Knowing ahead of time lets us plan a longer appointment, explain each step before we do it, and go at your pace.
It also helps to tell us what worries you most. It might be needles, the sound of the drill, gagging, a bad experience in the past, or feeling embarrassed about the state of your teeth. Each of these has practical solutions.
Ways we can make your visit easier
- Explaining everything first. No surprises: we’ll tell you what we’re going to do and how it should feel.
- A stop signal. Agree on a simple hand signal, and we’ll pause whenever you raise it.
- Effective numbing. We make sure the area is fully numb before starting treatment, and check with you along the way.
- Breaks whenever you need them.
- Starting small. If it has been a long time, your first visit can simply be a conversation and an exam, so you can get to know us before any treatment.
Things you can do
- Book a morning appointment, so you have less time to worry.
- Bring headphones and listen to music or a podcast.
- Practice slow breathing: in through your nose for four counts, out for six.
- Bring a friend or family member to wait for you.
- Avoid caffeine beforehand, which can make anxiety worse.
If your anxiety is severe
Please tell us. SmileNY Dental doesn’t offer sedation, but there is still a lot we can do: we can allow extra time, split longer treatment into shorter visits, and talk through what else might help you feel comfortable.
