Sealants and fluoride: extra protection against cavities

How dental sealants and professional fluoride treatments help prevent tooth decay, who benefits most, and what to expect at the appointment.

Tooth decay is one of the most common health problems in both children and adults, yet it is almost entirely preventable. Brushing, flossing and a sensible diet do most of the work. For people who are more prone to cavities, two simple treatments add an extra layer of protection: dental sealants and professional fluoride.

For the basics of how cavities form, read how to stop cavities before they start.

Dental sealants

The chewing surfaces of the back teeth have deep grooves and pits. They trap food and bacteria, and toothbrush bristles often can’t reach the bottom of them, which is why so many cavities start there.

A sealant is a thin, tooth-colored coating painted onto these surfaces. It flows into the grooves and hardens, creating a smooth surface that is much easier to keep clean.

  • Who benefits: children and teenagers, ideally soon after their permanent molars come in, and adults with deep grooves and no fillings in those teeth.
  • What it involves: the tooth is cleaned and dried, the sealant is painted on and hardened with a light. There’s no drilling or numbing, and it takes just a few minutes per tooth.
  • How long it lasts: sealants can last several years. We check them at each visit and touch them up if needed.

Professional fluoride treatments

Fluoride strengthens enamel and makes it more resistant to the acids that cause decay. It can even help repair the earliest stage of a cavity before a hole forms. Fluoride toothpaste provides daily protection. A professional treatment applies a more concentrated fluoride varnish or gel to the teeth during your visit.

  • Who benefits: children, and adults at higher risk of decay, for example people with dry mouth, receding gums with exposed roots, braces or aligners, many existing fillings, or a history of frequent cavities.
  • What it involves: the fluoride is painted or placed on the teeth after your cleaning. It takes a minute or two, and we’ll tell you how long to wait before eating or drinking.

Part of a complete prevention plan

Sealants and fluoride work best alongside good daily habits and regular checkups and cleanings. At each visit, we look at your individual risk of decay and recommend only the extra protection that makes sense for you.

When we do find a cavity, catching it early usually means a small tooth-colored filling. Learn more about Preventive Dental Care at SmileNY Dental, or contact us to schedule a visit.
